Time Is the Space Between Us
Srsly! My goal here is to warp your mind. Break your ideas of time. What a novel should be. How literature in this post iPhone world is going to engage readers. We know books are done, except for the few of us in the religion. Books take a long time to read. Large uninterrupted blocks of time. Alone. Almost impossible today.
Yet, necessary.
Reading is like downtime for your mind. Give the math, meth, and logic to someone else for bit. Tune in and tune out of your own problems, troubles, stressors. Jump into your mind with a familiar author, a familiar universe, timeline, perhaps different than your own, perhaps similar. If you like science fiction it’s okay to jump into the greats. Asimov. Snow Crash. William Gibson. Altered Carbon. If it’s less futuristic that’s fine to: Kerouac, Miller, Nin, Woolfe, Whitman. Rock n’ rollers. Set the pen in motion and put it all on red.
You bet with your time. How do you want to spend your next 24 hours? Folding laundry? Bitching at your kids to pick up their rooms? Playing tennis with a friend? Relaxing on the beach, by the pool, somewhere, anywhere, other than here?
I spend the same 24 hours each day that you do. I may spend my time differently. I have some idea of a theme and mode. I’m making it up on a daily basis, just like you, but it holds my sails to the wind in the middle of both storms and calm. I am on a mission. You are part of it. Thank you. Arriving here, at this moment in the book, in time, in your life and mine, was all part of my plan. Welcome. Hello.
Let me introduce you to a different concept of time.
I didn’t come up with the idea. I’m guessing Kurt Vonnegut didn’t either. (Ask Gemini, later.) All time is happening at once. Our experience of time is limited by our human viewport, our limited experience that indicates time is linear and unfolding in our lives as the years pass. This is no longer true. We know that now. Science has even shown how time travel is irrelevant. Who would’ve imagined free porn and now free time travel?
What a wonderful world.
