This is a survival job. It doesn’t cover my mortgage, much less, power, food, gas. My basic bills are more than twice my take-home pay from my cashier job. That’s hard math.
Today, I had to address the zeros in my bank account, the minimal payment warnings from my credit cards, and still find a sunny attitude at the store. I am on at 11 am this morning. I actually look forward to the work. I like most of the team. I enjoy sharing creative ideas with my young colleagues. (music tastes, books to read, ideas about their future plans)
I am safe. I have equity in my house, I was hoping not to raid. I have stock in the market, I was hoping not to trade. I sold out of all my stock this morning. In one day, I will not have a cash problem, but merely a cash flow problem.
Even at $16.32 I’m not making my base bills. I enjoy the people, the river of life, and the snacks and food I bring home. I’m working on a healthier diet.
To survive today’s shift I have several strategies.
- get something meaningful done before work
- apply for 5 great jobs
- arrive well fed and well caffeinated
- stay positive about the future of my career
- address the shifty leader who has frozen my role
I won’t bend to this moment. I will adapt. Flex. Stay positive. And keep 90% of my complaints to myself.
See you in line in a few hours, I’ll be wearing the Cheshire grin.

becomes the hope I have for myself,
my life, and my own journey.
