The lady in black was hidden from my view, maybe she was dead, we’d had no contact since the last black moment. Then something strange happened as I was walking back to the sleeping quarters to get my stuff. The core team was moving out, and I was running late. She appeared in one of the dimly lit hallways. There was an almost imperceptible flash of light, and a startup sound of some kind. Like the Windows chime, but shorter and more sublime.
There “she” was before me. A bit like Princess Leah in Chapter 1 of Star Wars, slightly transparent. She did not speak, however. She was staring at a wall in a hallway lined with chairs. Then she turned and looked right at me. No expression at all. As if she were still staring at the wall. No recognition.
As she began to raise her hand toward me, a warning, a greeting, I did not know, her eyes flashed red briefly with a hint of a smile on her face gave me goosebumps.
“Astrid?” I whispered, surprised, I had spoken what should’ve been my inside voice.
Some sort of scanning process started emanating from her eyes as she turned her body to face me. The radiating lines, probes, whatever it was were reaching out to me. I moved against the wall and both her gaze and the tracing lines retargeted on me. She/it could see me.
Panic swept through my body, a cold prickly sweat on my forehead came on as the shape of my former girlfriend moved toward me. I pressed against the wall, and slid a few steps away from the apparition. I held my breath and tried to slow my racing heart by inhaling slowly through my nose.
And she was on top of me, close, angry, I caught a whiff of electrical static. The hologram was burning dust out of the air. The world went silent as she got close enough to bite or kiss me. I could not breathe. All silence. All black. All Astrid and her burning evil eye as the apparition was on top of me.
“Astrid,” I said out loud, and everything went black.
