Astrid burst into the control room out of breath and excited. “You won’t believe what I’ve found!”
Json and the others looked up from their work.
“Pods! Millions of pods!”
Json put down his computer and stood up. “What?”
“Like coffee, pods. I can’t remember what they’re called. PODS!”
“Coffee?” said one of the women nearby.
“A whole warehouse full of them. A goldmine.”
Json reached out and held Astrid’s hand. “Slow down. What are you trying to say?”
“I was exploring. All the doors were locked. But one opened.”
“Okay.”
“Inside was a huge room full of those coffee pods.”
“Keurigs!” exclaimed one of the others.
“That’s it. That’s the name. Keurigs. That’s what my mom loved in the morning. Pop pop hiss. And she was happier after that.”
“Let’s go check it out,” said Json.
Sure enough, Astrid had found a warehouse piled high with Keurig pods. It was probably from the green movement’s fight against pods. They took them off the market. The plastics were hurting the environment, probably hurting the people drinking them too.
This was indeed a find. “Split up,” said Json to the team standing in awe of the mountain of coffee pods. If there is a pile of pods there’s got to be a brewer in here somewhere. I could use a cup of coffee. Even black.”
Within an hour, everyone was happier, more energetic. The brewer worked fine. Water was available from the small washroom. Life seemed a bit easier when you had access to electricity, water, and coffee.
“Okay, people, I know we’re happy, but let’s not lose focus of our objective. We can celebrate for a minute.”
Astrid tasted a sip of the coffee and spit it on the ground. “It’s awful!”
A well-deserved laugh passed through the small group.
“Listen up,” said Json. “We’re moving out of her in 12 hours. We’ve got to make it to the next rally point before sundown. But for now, enjoy your coffee. And let’s see how much of the coffee we can take with us, look for anything that would be useful.”
