Here is the podcast about this chapter: Swarm

The sound was like a buzz of bees. We were exploring deep in the recesses under the wind turbines. The “zzzzzzzzzzzz” came from a dark seemingly infinite hallway. Subtle at first. It was Astrid that noticed before the rest of us.

“There’s something coming!” she screamed.

We all stopped and listened. The “zzzzz” grew louder, still no visual.

“Ready for evasive action,” Json yelled just as the swarm of millions of wasp drones blew into our group like a swarm of locusts. Their abdomen ended in what appeared to be a stinger, The little buggers smashed into our crew. They were heavy, like bullets really.

“Hit the floor!” Json shouted. “They can’t fly around you.”

Looking up the swarm of digital wasps swirled in a counter-clockwise circle evaluating it’s next move. It was like those drone shows they started doing at live events. It was clear an intelligence or program was coordinating all of them together.

Json looked around the dark and buzzing hallway. Everyone was lying on the ground. Most were face down, protecting themselves. Json knew he had to act quickly while the bugs recalculated their mission.

“One at a time, we’re going to run back towards our base. Let’s count off. I’m ONE!”

Astrid yelled, “TWO!”

“If we don’t stay together,” Json continued, “They will have to spilt up. Let’s go in reverse order, Number 22, you’re first. I’ll shout out the release every 10 seconds. READY?”

Json was breathing heavy. He was worried. The wasps seemed to be forming into a new pattern just out of his reach above his prone body.

“22 – GO!”
