Listen to the discussion of this article: My Mid-Week Weekend
Today is Monday for me Wednesday for most people. Retail jobs have this sinister question in all applications: “Availability on nights, weekends, and holidays.” Yep, it’s a different life, a different experience of the week. Today I go in at 10 am, I’ve got another 30 minutes before I have to pack up and serve the people.
I’m somewhat rested. I did exactly what I wanted over the last two days. And I’d rather keep going on that, but I got up early this morning and have done some writing on my sci-fi project. It helps to have other creative projects in motion, it keeps my hopefulness up inside the machine of corporate grocery and unreliable management.
I did get my paperwork filed to remove the stain on my record due to my dental surgery. This was over a month ago. The same reason my Team Lead used for not giving me a shot at the “supervisor” role and instead giving me the minimal raise: thirty-two cents an hour. Woo hoo!
Okay, so it’s my Monday. I’ve had my coffee. Had some successful creative time by getting up early before my shift. I will walk in with a joy and pride at continuing my progress up and out. The interview on Friday went well, and I should be hearing about the upstairs gig this week or next.
“You can do it,” I tell myself. “You can plan and manage your energy and attention for the next 8.5 hours.”
One thing this role has taught me: going into the office for a job is going to be easy from this perspective. I’d still like to land a comprable remote job to the one I had a few years ago, but remote executive positions are the most competitive category.
Here I am. Writing my little mindfulness blog about being a cashier. Planning for my shift. And I am joyful. I know it’s hard to imagine. It’s hard for me sometimes to witness my own inner joy. I will have fun today. I will let the bullshit roll off my back. I will make the most of my opportunities at work and continue aspiring to be back in a non-retail role so I can sync weekends with any potential girlfriend on the horizon. There is one, but that’s for a different blog. {grin}
I hope to see you in or out of the checkout line.

becomes the hope I have for myself,
my life, and my own journey.
