I’ll admit this post was inspired by the YES song It Can Happen to You. The story is a bit deeper than that. Let me explain.
I didn’t end up at this grocery store by choice. I needed solid health insurance. The current administration is not doing anything to help me, and they will continue attacking healthcare and probably kill the ACA. So, I got a job with great healthcare. And while this is a fine solution, it’s also a trap. If I leave my grocery job I will lost my health insurance. I’m sort of locked in here, until I find a job that pays me my previous, or even a percentage of my previous wage.
I’m not holding my breath. I’m driving forwared and making the most out of this situation. And here we are, The Happy Cashier. My way of creatively processing and negotiating a dire situation with myself. Sort of an inner monologue that I’m sharing with my outside voice. Here you go.
I didn’t end up here by choice, but it can happen to any of us non-millionaires. If you are working for a living rather than collecting interest and investment income, then welcome to the revision of the American way.
It’s not a bad job. And I would suggest any people of any age look seriously at the “grocery life.” There are several other benefits beyond the healthcare. In my store we sell organic health food. So, I’m surrounded by great snacks, energy drinks, and a cafeteria style hotbar that feeds me at least one meal a day. I pay, of course, but I get a discount on everything I buy at my store. That’s a good deal. Don’t be dismayed by the low pay to start.
I’m hoping, as I was promised early on, to be reviewed for my first advancement. There have been some issues with the hiring process, but I’m confident that I will weather the storm and at least be interviewed for the role. Let’s see how this plays out for me personally.
I would never wish misfortune on anyone. And, it can happen to anyone. I have kids who need money, I need healthcare, I have a house and car. I need a consistent income stream. Here’s to hoping I can raise the bar on my hourly wage at least a few dollars. (fingers crossed)
I’ll see you in line.
