I’m going to be straight with you. Of the holy trinity… I get GOD. I get the holy spirit. I don’t get Jesus. Sorry. My Christian friends are worried for my soul. I’m okay.
What the Pope said a few weeks ago, though, that brought it all home. Even the title of this book comes from that moment. Here’s what he said.
“God is God.”
…
Huge.
Here’s a bit of the light this shed on my own soul. God is mysterious and beyond human comprehension. (These are my words, by the way, not a paraphrase.) Jesus came through and reset all of the rules. A lot of people didn’t see Jesus as the One. Many never heard of him, were here long before he arrived, and are still moving along the Earth praying to the Father Sun and Sister Moon. Are they all wrong? If the Jesus quote is real, “My way or the highway,” then what the Pope just did was expand God’s reach.
Now, as I see it, Native Americans, Jews, Muslims, Hedonists, all worship the same capital G, God. One God. So incomprehensible. Bigger than our human religions and bigger than… You know it’s coming. Bigger than Jesus.
That’s where I come back in. It’s what I’ve been thinking all this time. What about the goddamn Indians? Because they worship corn and not Jesus, are they all going to Hell? That’s not a plan I’m good with. So, Jesus, might still be out there somewhere, but the Pope just said to all of us, God (however your human mind can try to comprehend something so great) is beyond our ability to conceive of God. So, just be with God. We’re all with God. The Indians, the Jews, the Muslims, they are all right with God.
Now, that’s a big GOD.
Can I get an amen?
