LISTEN to the podcast discussion of this article: Friends on the Path
People who are on a conscious spiritual journey light up a different way when they come into my line. Eye contact. A smile. “Bing!” Almost an audible connection sound. We see each other.
Namasté – the seeker in me recognises the seeker in you
In discussing my spiritual questioning to a close Christian friend of mine, I described myself as “questioning.” His word was “seeker.”
I was raised Southern Presbyterian by a mom who became an elder in the church. She derived a lot of comfort from her service in the church, and ultimately the community that visited and surrounder her during her later years. She was surrounded by God. She and I talked about God and spirituality. I confessed to her, “I don’t really understand Jesus.”
“That’s okay,” she assured me. If you get any one of the holy trinity you’re okay. God is great. He is too fantastic for humans to comprehend. That’s actually the message of Jesus.”
In my position, behind the cash register, our options for communication are limited. I stay away from politics, money, and my own complaints. I quiet my own mind, and listen for the signals of the people coming to me for sustenance and “feel good” vibes. In the second we meet eyes it is obvious if we are on the same wavelength or not. When there is a YES, we both feel it. It doesn’t even have to be acknowledged. It is like an understanding passes through us.
These are “Friends on the Path.” Other seekers. Whatever their concept of god is, jesus, mohammed, allah, great spirit: we see the seeker in each other. That is enough. A connection is made, the bond acknowledged, and we move along with our tasks and our lives.
Our tribe is up to us. Gather other seekers into your circle. Learn from each other. Love each other. Grow and move on. The path continues for our entire lifetime. Friends and lovers are finite. The spiritual glow and assurance of some “higher power” gives many of us hope, even in the dark times.
Let’s share our journey, even if just for a few minutes.
“Hi, I’m glad you’re here,” I say to you.
