Hear the discussion of this chapter on YouTube: Return to Patience
Right. It’s time to reset once again. Back to the patience and grace that brought me to this job, this place in my life, for the lessons to learn. Over and over the world will disappoint you. You can’t expect people to do what’s right. People do whatever they want. They are motivated by something.
There must be some reason my team lead doesn’t want me to succeed on the team.
You don’t seem very serious about this job. You’re applying for other jobs. Right, he sees that I’m aiming above this job. Maybe he’s worried I’m aiming for his job. But the rest of the leadership team above him have been even less transparent. The Coffee Summit with the Store Owner. Didn’t happen. The second in command said, “I’ll let him know you want to speak with him,” she said as she revealed he’d forgotten. He never got back to me. She never got back to me. Here I am. 5 days a week. I’m here. Not failing, not going away.
Until I can, right? Sure, they know I’m not aimed for supervisor as my next opportunity. It’s obvious. The part that’s not obvious is how you’d sabatoje a star performer and pass him up for promotion. The last two supervisors they hired have already quit. Now they’ve hired a new Assistant Team Leader, and he’s nice, but no previous grocery experience. Perhaps this is a legitimate career move for him. Perhaps he’s caught between a rock and a hard place looking for the next opportunity comminersate with his experience. That’s fine.
So, this role is not part of my strategy, but it is my life right now. Anyone that prevents me from growing and shining is no friend. He’s threatened. Bummer. He plays like we’re buddies. But that’s the only tactic he has. I’m amazed at the lack of direct leadership, coaching, encouragement all of the “store leaders” have. It’s like they are stuck in an underpaid business with a chip on their shoulders too about anyone who comes in and aspires to aim higher than now, this role, cashier.
Okay.
I can pause here. Work starts in 30 minutes. The coffee is starting to kick in.
And we’ll have another day at the mecca of organic groceries, body lotions, and supplements. Don’t forget the hot bar.
Hi ho, hi ho.
I hope to see you in the checkout line before I move on.

The hope I see in others
becomes the hope I have for myself,
my life, and my own journey.
