We’ve lost some of our human community since Covid. We must strive to get our humanism back. Here’s how that looks.
Each day we are bombarded by social media, reality tv, news, tiks and toks. And that’s just our interruptions. We’ve also got jobs, chores, kids, bills, desires, stresses. So, it’s rough out there for most of us. And AI isn’t making things better. Let’s counter act AI and deHumanization by being even more connective, more human, more receptive to others.
I may not agree with the slogan on your red baseball cap, but I can see you as a human. “How is your day going?” I ask. It’s a pleasantry. Much like, “How are you?” But in this case, I’m actually going to listen and engage with your response. Or disconnect if you don’t respond or respond with frustration. We’ve all got enough on our plate, I don’t need to run my own positivism agenda at you. So, I wait. I listen. I smile.
For the ON people it’s an invitation to explore our short relationship. We’ve got a little time, let’s learn a bit about our human story. Let me hear a little bit about what’s exciting you, worrying you, or even how you didn’t find the gluten-free tamari sauce you wanted. It’s all important. It’s all about you. I listen.
I don’t know anything about tamari. I do know there’s a brand we carry of almond flour products that is fantastic. We can talk about that. “Have you tried…?”
I’m not looking to become your friend, although that might happen. I’m not looking to win a popularity contest. I’m just looking to connect with you for a minute or two in a human-2-human exchange. My only pre-wire is my loving mantra.
may you be safe, may you be happy, may you be healthy, may you live with ease
In one eight-hour shift I encounter 160 – 200 people. What I take away from it is joy, exhaustion, and some more data points for my humanism thesis. I’m in an experimental lab of people who love organic food and have the money to afford it. It’s a nice tribe to have.

becomes the hope I have for myself,
my life, and my own journey.
