I do get ahead of myself. I do push the river, trying to make things happen according to my plan. Well, that’s not how corporate grocery works, nor corporate anything. I am definitely on the thrash end of my job growth quest here. Again, yesterday I was working with the hiring manager, who said, “Let’s get together today.”
Never happened.
At the end of our shift together, he punted and said, “It looks like we’ll have to wait until Thursday to chat.”
I don’t want a chat. I want an interview. What could possibly be holding up just this simple formality? It could be the poor attention of this manager. It could be events happening above his head that I don’t know about. Perhaps there are larger plans. I’m fairly sure they don’t know about my next steps interview upstairs in the global marketing department. But… even if they did, I believe they owe me an interview. As they are interviewing so many others, I see them parading through, and they continue to promote or relist the job of “supervisor.”
I don’t know if this manager is threatened by me, or just a poor leader. I have my suspicions.
If your leader is not leading his team, what is he doing? What value does an incompetent leader provide to the people below him? A sweet guy, sure, but dragging me along. He doesn’t seem to understand is inaction is costing me money. Real money. Perhaps it’s bad news. Maybe that’s why he is avoiding the conversation. If he *is* avoiding the conversation, it must not be good news.
Letting go of the outcome. I’ve put my application in. I’ve heard little or nothing for two weeks while candidates stream through the store. “Things are getting pretty serious on the supervisor role,” he said to me last week.
Yes, that’s what I’m talking about. I just want an official interview for the position. Simple ask. Consideration. Transparency about what’s going on with my application.
The real move is to let go and move on. Just do the job. Continue to deliver excellent customer service. Continue to give this manager a soft pass. Let the process play out both here on the grocery store floor and upstairs in the global marketing department.
Let’s meet in the checkout line.
