I had my “check in” with the team lead today. No wonder he was stalling on me. The reasons he gave for not advancing me to the next level in my grocery store life.
- Attendance
- Not Serious Enough
- Obviously Applying for Other Positions
What can I do to improve my performance? Um…
Okay, so perhaps this store, this team is not for me. I’m happy to continue as the happy cashier for now, for a bit. When I responded to him about the “applying for other positions” he said, “It makes it seem like this is just a temporary job for you.” Um… I said, “Did you look at the jobs I was applying for?” “No.” “I was applying for the next step job, supervisor, at other stores, since I wasn’t getting any information from you.”
“I can’t live on this wage,” I said. “I hear you, man,” he said. “I really do.”
Again, then what is the issue with me trying to move up, trying to move on if the UP is not offered to me here? There’s supposed to be an automatic review at 90 days. An automatic wage increase of… wait for it… 2%. Let me do the math. I’ll make $16.32 an hour, then?
On another front, in my attempt to stay within this company, I have a next round interview with the recruiter for a position “upstairs” in the corporate marketing office. A few other recruiters have been reaching out to me, putting me forward for jobs back in my normal field in tech marketing and healthcare marketing, at FOUR TO SIX TIMES the pay rate.
There was a moment when it seemed like this manager was ready for me to quit on the spot. I smiled. “Okay then.” I said. “I did let you know I was applying for those other jobs, right?” “Yes, you did.”
“Okay,” I said. “I need a little coaching. If I do get invited to a different store or a different role, I’d like to do everything above board so I don’t damage my opportunities here.”
“I get that.”
“Okay, I’ll keep you informed.”
“Sounds good.”
“And, thank you for you time, today,” I said, standing up. It was going to be a long shift.
Catch me in the checkout line before it’s too late.
