I am learning to let go of my corporate dreams. I am also focusing in on the quality of life, the people I am surrounded with, and my creative pursuits. It was always an odd juxtaposition with my musician friends that I was also making a lot of money in the marketing world. They were starving.
I learned the other day that I am in love with hippies. I love the ideas of the sixties. And I was raised by a sister who was ten years older than me and a quintessential hippie. While I grew up in the house of a successful doctor, my sister was a full-blown hippie. Her friends were hippies. And thus, at five, I became a hippie too. They were my tribe.
As I got older, I was living near the first Whole Foods Market. It was full of hippies. Hippies founded it. Hippies worked there. And my tribe of hippies, maybe yuppies at the time, were into the clean living ideas and the healthy snacks. I was also into the pachuli and shea butter babes walking the aisles looking for enlightenment and better food. Money was no object when I was younger.
Today, I find myself surrounded by my tribe again. There must be a better way to say hippie. But that’s really what we are, at the end of the day. No matter how successful and wealthy we become, we are committed to each other, to the Earth, and to being kind to each other.
BE KIND AT EVERY OPPORTUNITY.
I know I cannot change the past. I know I cannot predict the future. So, my lifepath is remaining in the present moment with myself first, then with others, and finally with god. – the happy cashier, july 2025
As I reach inside Whole Foods Market, I plan to “go upstairs,” as they call it. I am also aware that this moment has been a spiritual breakthrough for me. From the first weeks when I was ashamed walking the parking lot pulling in carts, to the horror at meeting someone I knew from my previous life as a high-flying marketing executive.
Today, I am at peace. I am eating healthy snacks, healthier meals. I am surrounded by the beautiful people, hippies and non-hippies, in search of better food. Here we can find connection. Humans. Here I can be of service at every level. I don’t need to stand apart from my customers or my colleagues. I am here. I am content. I am happy.
Am I fulfilled? Well, that is something to explore on another day.
Namasté.
