i want hair like rhett miller

i want hair like rhett miller

i don’t want to be him or anything
my hair a bit more warhol these days
my rock
ever more nuanced
sly and straight ahead at the same time
i have the strength of a younger man
hair of a demigod
and the voice of a bird
someone told me that once
*you sing like a bird*
another friend
woman
said
have you ever thought
of having
others
sing
your
songs

i did not follow up on her opinions
nor offer mine
on ya lit and lowered expectations
she
dropped my calls
remembers the moment

when people are not ready to listen
or read poetry
it is best to leave them
to their own distractions
connections can be exhausting
i talk less these days
but still a lot
to everyone

in passing
my mother
unlocked her soul
and unyielding support
of my writing and my music
in ways she could not
before
surviving your children must be awful
worrying about the sensitive ones
was her job
obsession
undoing

alone here near the mountain again
i seek
other
indifferent
blue sky spirits
starlings
chili
ojo caliente
and
god
