Felix Culpa ATX at Steamboat the night before the very first SXSW. I was signed away from the band a week later, to hopefully reunite with my main songwriting partner and other John. The deal involved a lot of posturing. No deal. A guitar was sent to me in lieu of demo money. I recorded my first demo on my own dime with Mark Hallman, Chris Vreeland, Tommy Taylor, and Dave Sebree on guitar.
This is the first of four segments covering the entire show.
Here are the three songs from my initial demo.
Blue Cartoon at Steamboat
Here are the first two Blue Cartoon records on a Spotify playlist.
The coolest part of Blue Cartoon for me, was being in a band with two other great songwriters. Thank you Lee and Jeff. And being trusted to sing and perform their songs. Over time, I got 4 tracks on the first two BC records. As we began rehearsals for the next record, my wife became pregnant and as we moved to small house together, I knew I needed to express and publish more than four songs every two years.
Thus, Buzzie arrived. Here is my audio-challenged performance from the El Ray theater in Los Angeles. The same night Buzzie played a little CA band named Kara’s Flowers. That band went on to become Maroon 5.
Here is a full show from an outdoor stage in Orange County. Thank you to David Bash for founding and continuing The International Pop Overthrow.
And here is a song that captures a little of Buzzie’s last IPO performance at The Orange County Fairgrounds.
Thanks to Robbie Rist for always being my wingman at IPO in LA.
Much later, back in Austin, I began a new outfit, now dubbed Buzzie 2.0. Here is the set of songs we recorded.
Today, I’m working to put another live Buzzie band together. I’ve dabbled in name changing ideas. I released four of the songs via YouTube and on Spotify as Jetpack Joyride. And then the pandemic hit. I am sure that I will continue to be Buzzie, perhaps Jetpack Joyride is the name of the upcoming album. But there’s no since in releasing an album into the Spotify void. My plan is to put a few videos together, and do some live shows. Until those ideas are in place, and I have a small promotional budget available, you can hear a few of the songs here.
Here is the playlist with all of the Buzzie videos to date.
Be well. Go see live music. Buy band merch. We ain’t makin any money from the streams.
Blessings.
