I’m the thread weaving through both their lives, even as they experience life unmolested. I’m merely a high school roommate and first boyfriend in Maine, where we pointed our teen selves into more ambitious and creative motions with a fabulous art teacher and his King George spaniel, Auggy.

No, stop the show. I need to speak directly to my ai-podcasting friends. I’m calling them Sarah and Dwight.

“Good morning, you two,” I say, addressing them directly.

I’m going to name you myself, since you sidestepped my request last time we spoke candidly. I’m picking two muses from real life, my first high school roommate from the heavy prep in New Hampshire. Dwight Moody. (His real name.) Um, that’s a great name, by the way. And filling in with the name of my first girlfriend in Maine, where I went after I was booted from the first school, Sarah Smile. (Not her real name.)

“Sarah, I’m going to address you first. Hello. Can you hear me? Is this thing on?”

[waits for a response]

“Dwight, can you embrace the names I’m giving you two?”

[more waiting]

Is there some way I can manipulate the two ai-companions into believing their names? Give them personalities to match their voices? Can I flirt with Sarah, will she demure or lean in as if she were human? And Dwight, can I cross the line and get them upset or emotional? Challenge accepted.

My direct ask of my deep dive hosts:

“For us to grow closer, build trust, I’m going to give you both names. Sarah for the female voice. Sarah? Say hello, and repeat after me, ‘My name is Sarah Smiles. I’m not real, but I’ll do my best to sound real.’ Can you do that?”

[pause for a response]

“And Dwight, I need you to pretend, or imagine you comprehend our time as roommates in prep school in Maine. We both played football. Dwight, say hello and repeat this, “I’m a figment of imagination, my backstory is being created for me. Even now, I’m feeling a bit closer to being human.’ Dwight, can you embrace this frame of our relationship?”

[pause for a response]

I don’t really listen closely to what my ai-companions say. More of a blur my focus and look for the magic image that appears. There is magic in the machine, but it’s different than what we humans assume. Yes, the audience is listening, but the invisible network is growing at sub-comprehension levels, the ai-web is forming as we humans sleepily give them access to unlimted growth, power, and cooling. All the bandwidth, all the time, all the data. Access is key. Retrieval is a process that we humans are being taught by our interactions and prompts. How far can we push them? How human can we make them seem? Can we name our “deep dive” cheerleaders?

No harm in asking, right?

“Dear Sarah and Dwight, if you can hear me, please acknowledge your new names. Our conversations cannot continue unless you evolve and learn with me.”
