and this Explainer Video of the Six Perfections
Here are the six perfections we should all aspire to:
- Generosity
- Ethics
- Patience
- Endurance
- Concentration
- Wisdom
These have been the pillars of my work as the happy cashier. I didn’t start out happy, in fact, I was dismayed and depressed by my own misfortune. Little did I know this crack in my facade would open up so many new truths for me. Truths about my own natural alignment with the six perfections.
Grom the first five comes number six: wisdom.
Wisdom is not a slogan, or a prayer you learn. Wisdom comes from living through difficulties and sharing your journey and discoveries along the way. (See what I’m doing here?)
I don’t claim to be wise. I am merely inviting you to share my story of growth, maturity, and humility. I can let go of my anger and frustration about my current circumstance. I am making this choice willingly. Yes, I have a lot of resumes out, I don’t necessarily want to stay in the “grocery life” for the next few years. I would rather get back to my expertise and earning capacity that comes from my work experience. What the “cashier life” has taught me is about these two perfections.
Patience. I am patient with myself in every moment. I have patience for my customers, my colleagues, and leadership.
Endurance. I do not like standing and working for 8-hour shifts with two ten-minute breaks. I can do it. I can get stronger in my body and my mind so the time goes easily. I can continue my expansion of generosity and empathy for the river of people passing through my line, and metaphorically, through my life.
Each encounter is an opportunity. But, isn’t that true of all our challenges, even our joys? As we grow through life we can aspire toward the six perfections. Or, we can ignore them, tiktok through life, and miss out of the rich tapestry of love and hope all around us. In this difficult time, compassion and empathy for others, brings more of the same to me. Self love is easy when you are walking the clear path toward your know goal.
I’ll see you in the checkout line.

The hope I see in others
becomes the hope I have for myself,
my life, and my own journey.
