lose our loneliness – a poem

lose our loneliness – a poem

evidence shows that i grow tired
that tap dancing and love poems
eventually wind down
leaving only
quiet
if the ballet
has been one-sided
or the moments become difficult
my joyous momentum
might no longer carry the day
as we tumble into the dark night
together yet wrestling alone
side-by-side
i could touch you
see you
taste you
and yet loneliness
was the word you used
by the pool by the ocean in the jungle
a sorrow my love could not warm
the sun and salt water could not calm
and i began to understand
that no amount of lovemaking
was going to fill that ache
for either of us
me wanting something joyous and resonant
you wanting to be contained
quelled, comforted, relieved
i watched your youthful beauty
glistening nearby
praying i could figure it all out
make you happy
energetic and boisterous again
and soothe over all the ghosts
of last night
and lose our loneliness
