as we prepared to leave – a poem of loss and forgetting

as we prepared to leave – a poem of loss and forgetting

i was on that plaza again
the one where i knew we’d never reach each other
again
winding down our relationship
skipping over cobblestone streets
in celebrations
of what
the end
of your prowess
of your decision to turn towards the moon
and those nights
beautiful nights with waves crashing
outside the open hotel window
it was a dream
a romantic fantasy
but with the wrong two people
in bed
touching
and yet never finding warmth
it was a honeymoon of sorts
would’ve been
had the plans not broken down
over desperation
addiction
and a necessary release
we could taste the mediterranean
but the water was behind jagged rocks
and cold enough to kill
summer had not arrived
so we lounged by the pool
a bottle of champagne
to seal the escape
and you were amazingly gorgeous
in your element
and fine fine fitness
i’ll never get it out of me completely
the magic of us
until it grew dark
and bitter
like cold coffee
with grounds in the bottom
of the cracked ceramic mug
there was still the lift
but the cost was becoming too heavy
as the stars showered love down
on the non-honeymoon bed
and we made love
in our usual fashion
i could feel parts of my soul
wandering out the window
to look down on the waves crashing
in the moonlight
and the sound of distant music
from a dancing evening happening somewhere
faraway over the sparkling water
and the waves were light that night
the breeze fluttering the curtains in our room
all night and into the morning
as we prepared to leave
spain, pain, and each other
